A global key is sold as having no regional restriction, a ROW ("rest of the world") key is made for countries outside the regions that have their own version, and an EU key is made for accounts in Europe. These words are sellers' labels, not terms defined by Steam, and the exact country list differs from product to product. What decides whether a key works for you is the country list on the product page, not the word in the title.
What the labels usually mean
| Label | Usually means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Global, Region free, Worldwide | No regional limit is listed for the key | Whether the page still shows a Cannot be activated in line |
| ROW (rest of the world) | Countries outside the regions that have their own version | The country list. "ROW" alone does not say which countries are out |
| EU, Europe | Accounts in Europe; the list of countries varies | Whether your country is on the list, especially outside the EU itself |
| One country or area, such as United States or Latin America | Accounts set to that country or area | That your account's country matches exactly |
These are not Steam's words
Steam Support's pages on product keys explain what a key is, how to register it and what the invalid and duplicate errors mean. They do not define "Global", "ROW" or "EU", and they publish no country list for any of them. The labels come from the people who sell keys, and two sellers can use the same word for different lists.
That is why a question like "do global Steam keys work in the US?" has no single answer from Steam. A key labelled global is meant to have no country limit, so the United States is normally covered. The proof is the product's own list: if the United States is not under Cannot be activated in, the catalogue lists no limit for it.
Global vs ROW
The practical difference is that ROW always leaves some countries out. A global key is offered as unrestricted. A ROW key exists because some regions get their own version of the game, and the ROW version is for everyone else. Which countries are "everyone else" is set per game, so never treat ROW as a synonym for global.
Why key regions exist
Games are priced differently in different markets, and platforms tie codes to regions. Their own support pages say so:
- Steam says, about gifts, that because of regional price differences some gifts cannot be sent to recipients in other purchase regions.
- PlayStation says a voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account.
- Xbox says some codes are meant for a specific country or region that might not match the regional settings on your account.
- Nintendo says a download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo Account set to the same region as the code, and gives the example that a European code will not work with a North American account.
How to read the region on a KryptoMate product page
Our games catalogue shows the region in two places, and for restricted keys it shows the countries too.
- Open the product and find the details list. The Region line shows the catalogue's label for the key, for example Region Free, Europe, Rest Of The World or a country name. Worldwide is shown when the catalogue lists no regional limit.
- Look at the purchase panel. The line Can be activated in repeats that region.
- Check the next line when there is one. It reads Cannot be activated in or Can only be activated in, followed by a number of countries.
- Select View list on that line to see the countries by name.
- Compare the list with the country of your account on the platform. If your country is under "Cannot be activated in", or missing from "Can only be activated in", choose a different product.
The Region filter on the Games page uses the same idea, with options such as Region free, Europe, Outside Europe, RoW (Rest of World), United States, Latin America and Asia.
What applies when label and list disagree
The list. A title can say "Global" while the page still shows a line with excluded countries, because "global" was the seller's word and the list is the data. Our help article on checking platform and region says the same: the country list is what counts.
Region is not platform
A key also has a Platform line: Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and others. A region that fits you does not help if the platform is wrong. Check both lines before you pay.
If you bought the wrong region
A key bought for the wrong region by your own selection can't be refunded, and an activated key is final. Our Refund Policy excludes purchases of region-locked products made despite the warning on the product page. An invalid or undelivered key is different: report it within 48 hours of delivery and it is reviewed under the Refund Policy.
Bought the key with crypto?
The payment method has no effect on a key's region. A key paid for with USDT has the same Region line as any other. Keys are under Games, and How to pay On-Chain covers paying with a coin you hold.
Frequently asked questions
It is a Steam key sold as having no regional restriction, also called region free or worldwide. The word is the seller's, not Steam's. Check the product page for a "Cannot be activated in" line before you rely on it.
