An Xbox game code is a 25-character code that you redeem while signed in to your Microsoft account. On a console, open the guide, go to Store, open the side menu and select Redeem. You can also redeem at xbox.com/redeem or in the Xbox app on Windows or on your phone. Check the account first: Xbox Support says a redeemed code cannot be transferred to another Microsoft account.

How to redeem a code on an Xbox console

These are the console steps from Xbox Support's page "How to redeem gift cards, codes, and offers", with two checks added at the start.

  1. Copy the code from your order page. Xbox codes have 25 characters in five blocks of five: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
  2. Make sure the console is signed in to the Microsoft account that should own the game.
  3. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select Store.
  4. Press the View button to open the side menu, and then select Redeem.
  5. Enter the 25-character code, select Next, and then follow the prompts.

Other places to redeem

On the web

Xbox Support's page links straight to xbox.com/redeem for redeeming a code now. Sign in with the right Microsoft account and enter the code there.

In the Xbox app for Windows

  1. Press the Start button and enter Xbox into the search bar.
  2. Choose the Xbox app from the results.
  3. Select your gamerpic, and then select Settings.
  4. Select Redeem under "Redeem a code".
  5. Enter the 25-character code, select Next, and then follow the prompts.

In the Xbox app for mobile

Go to your profile by selecting your profile picture, open settings with the gear icon, and select Redeem code. Enter the code, select Next and follow the prompts.

Before you redeem

Xbox Support lists several things to check first.

  • The account. If the code is a present for someone else, they must sign in and redeem it on their own account.
  • The region. Some codes are meant for a specific country or region that might not match the regional settings on your account. Xbox says to make sure the region on your Microsoft account matches your physical location.
  • A payment option. You may be asked to add payment option info before you can redeem. Xbox says you will not be charged for redeeming.
  • Extra instructions. Some codes come with their own redemption instructions, and some can't be redeemed on a console.
  • Account status. Some codes can't be redeemed if the Microsoft account is suspended or has a balance due.

Region of the account vs region of the code

If a code doesn't match your Microsoft account's region, Xbox Support's advice is to contact the retailer. It also says you may be required to turn off a VPN to redeem certain region-locked codes. That is why the region has to be checked before buying: see how to check a game key's region lock.

Game code, gift card or Game Pass code

All three use the same 25-character format and the same Redeem screen. What differs is what lands on your account.

  • Game or add-on code. The game is added to your account. Xbox says content you download from the Microsoft Store installs automatically, and shows under My games & apps > Manage > Queue while it downloads.
  • Gift card. The amount is added to your Microsoft account balance, which you then spend in the store. Our guide to redeeming an Xbox gift card covers balance and currency.
  • Subscription code. Xbox says some subscription codes are meant for new members only, and that a subscription can only be extended up to a limit that depends on the product and your country.

Codes from other publishers can look similar. Xbox Support gives in-game currency cards as an example: those are redeemed in the game's own store or on the publisher's website, not on the Redeem screen.

If the code doesn't work

Xbox Support says typos are the most common reason for an invalid or incorrect code. It also notes that Xbox codes never contain these characters: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1 and 5. Copy the code again from your order page.

A message that the code was already redeemed means it is on a Microsoft account, possibly a different one of yours. Check your order history and subscriptions there. More messages are explained in Game key not working.

Xbox codes on KryptoMate

On a game's product page, the Platform line names the console family, for example Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, and the Region line names the area the code is made for. These are Xbox products in our games catalogue today:

From the KryptoMate catalogue on 11 Oct 2026. A few Xbox products. Prices and stock change; each product's page shows today's price and its "Region" line.

Delivery is usually instant, but it might take 0–24 hours in rare cases. A code bought for the wrong region by your own selection can't be refunded, and a redeemed code is final. An invalid or undelivered code is reviewed under the Refund Policy when you report it within 48 hours of delivery.

Bought the code with crypto?

Xbox treats the code the same whatever you paid with. Game codes are under Games, and How to pay On-Chain explains paying with a coin you hold.
