An Xbox gift card is a 25-character code that you redeem to your Microsoft account, at xbox.com/redeem, on an Xbox console or on Windows. The money becomes Microsoft account balance. On regions, Xbox Support says some codes are meant for a specific country or region that might not match the regional settings on your account, so buy the card for the country your Microsoft account is set to.
How to redeem an Xbox gift card on a console
These are the console steps from Xbox Support, for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
- Have the code ready: 25 letters and numbers in five blocks of five. Copy it from your order page with Copy if you will paste it elsewhere.
- Sign in on the console with the Microsoft account that should receive the balance.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Store.
- Press the View button to open the side menu, then select Redeem.
- Enter the 25-character code, select Next and follow the prompts.
Xbox Support notes that you may be asked to add payment information before you can redeem; redeeming the code does not charge you.

Go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in and enter or paste the code. You can paste the code here. Microsoft's own support page describes the same thing: select Redeem code, sign in, and enter or paste the code.
In the Xbox mobile app
Xbox's two pages differ here. The Xbox Support article lists steps for the mobile app (profile picture, gear icon, Redeem code), while the xbox.com/redeem page says codes can't be redeemed in the mobile app at this time. If you don't find the option in the app, use the browser.
Which region to buy
What Xbox says about country and region
Xbox Support's guidance, in short:
- Some codes are meant for a specific country or region that might not match the regional settings on your account. Make sure the region on your Microsoft account matches your physical location.
- If you get an error that a code is outside your region, Xbox says to contact the seller. It does not convert the code.
- Xbox's payment-errors page says you may have to turn off a VPN to redeem certain region-locked codes.
Microsoft adds one more fact on its page about changing the store region: the funds in your Microsoft account do not move with you. Microsoft says it can't transfer money between regions, and tells you to spend your balance before changing your account location.
The working rule: card country equals account country. This is ordinary region lock.

Choose the card for your Microsoft account's country, such as Xbox USA or Xbox UK. For a card named after an area, such as Xbox EU, open the Terms tab to see which countries it covers; the Redeemable in line on the product page gives the short answer. Game Pass products are subscriptions, not account balance, and have their own terms.
If the code doesn't work
What Xbox lists
- Invalid or incorrect code. Xbox says typos are the most common reason. It also says these characters are never used in Xbox codes: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1 and 5. If you see one of them, you misread a character.
- Already redeemed. Check that you didn't redeem it yourself under another Microsoft account, and look at your order history. Redeemed content can't be moved to a different account.
- From a different region. If the code doesn't match your Microsoft account's region, Xbox directs you to the seller.
- Suspended account. A suspended account, or one with a balance due, may not be able to redeem.
What to do on our side
Copy the code again from your order page and paste it at xbox.com/redeem. Then confirm which Microsoft account is signed in and which country it is set to.
Since Xbox sends region problems back to the seller, tell us quickly: contact support with your order number and a screenshot of the error, and leave out the code. An invalid or undelivered code is reviewed under our Refund Policy when you report it within 48 hours of delivery.
