You redeem a Steam gift card on Steam's own page, Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code, while signed in to the account that should get the money. Steam's redeem page says the value is converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet when you redeem it, wherever the card was bought. Steam Support also says it limits redemption to the wallet's currency, so the safe choice is a card in the currency your wallet already uses.
How to redeem a Steam gift card
- Copy the wallet code from your order page with Copy. Don't retype it.
- Open Steam's redeem page: store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode.
- Sign in to the Steam account that should receive the value. Steam's page says you must be logged in to redeem.
- Paste the code into the Steam Wallet Code field and select Continue.
- Check your wallet balance. Steam shows it in the upper right-hand corner, next to your profile name.
How to redeem a Steam gift card on mobile
Steam's redeem page is a normal web page. Open the link above in your phone's browser, sign in and enter the code the same way. Steam's help pages do not list different steps for phones, so we don't describe app menus here.
Which region to buy
Are Steam gift cards region locked?
Steam publishes two statements, and both matter:
- The redeem page says Steam Gift Cards and Wallet Codes are converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet upon redemption, regardless of where they were purchased.
- The Steam Wallet FAQ lists, among the steps Valve has taken against gift card scams, limiting redemption to the currency of your Steam Wallet.
Steam does not publish a country-by-country list. So the rule we can stand behind is short: match the card to your wallet's currency, and treat any other combination as a risk you take yourself.
How your wallet currency is set
Steam Support says that if your account has never held a wallet balance, you may be asked for your current address so Steam can choose the right currency. If you already have a wallet, new funds arrive in its existing currency, even when the balance is zero. Wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account.

On each product page, read the Redeemable in line and open the Terms tab before you pay. A card named after one country can carry its own condition there. We can't convert a card or move it to another account afterwards.
If the code doesn't work
What Steam says
Steam's Wallet FAQ names two causes for an error on a wallet code:
- A mistyped character. Steam lists the usual mix-ups: the number 0 against the letters O, Q or D; the number 1 against the letter I; the letter B against the number 8; the letter G against the number 6.
- A code that is not active yet. Steam says activation by the seller can take several hours after purchase.
If Steam shows a message about region or currency instead, compare your wallet's currency with the card's Redeemable in line and Terms tab. That message means Steam has refused the pairing. It does not mean the code is broken.
What to do on our side
- Go back to your order page and use Copy again, then paste the code. This rules out a typing error.
- Check that you are signed in to the Steam account you meant to top up, and look at its balance. A second attempt on a code that already worked will fail.
- If the code still fails, contact support with your order number and a screenshot of Steam's message. Don't paste the full code into chat.
An invalid or undelivered code is reviewed under our Refund Policy; report it within 48 hours of delivery. A card bought for the wrong region or currency by your own selection can't be refunded, and a redeemed code is final.
Bought it with crypto?
